The basin of the Aterno – Pescara River (3.200 km², Abruzzo Region, Italy), has deeply changed during the last century from the hydraulic point of view (changes of the main river beds, cross-drainage works and water intakes for agriculture, industry, hydroelectric plants and fish farming, retaining works) and from the environmental point of view(change of water quality). Moreover there are many hydraulic dangers along the river, namely the “ATO 4” District (EPSA) is affected by important problems related with the use and management of water resources in term of water supply. The overall objective of the project is the definition of (short, medium and long term) Action Plan to support the relevant Authorities in the sustainable management and rational use of water resources (water supply) in the EPSA area.

Specific objectives of the Project:

  • Assessment of use and management of hydraulic facilities for drinking water supply;
  • Assessment of availability and quality of surface water resources;
  • Assessment of availability and quality of aquifers;
  • Definition of management and protection measures for water resources;
  • Structural and non-structural action plan (rehabilitation of drinking water supply network, new supply networks, etc.) for management and protection of water resources;
  • Technical support to local authorities (EPSA) for the development of specific measures.
