The Bovilla reservoir (surface: 95 km², storage volume: 80 Mm³) supplies drinking water to Tirana (AK); the Ulza basin (surface: 1220 km², reservoir volume: 177 Mm³) allows for electricity production of 120 GWh/year. Bovilla and Ulza watersheds are vulnerable to climate change hazards, particularly droughts and floods. Bad land management practices have adversely affected natural ecosystems, community livelihoods, and infrastructure.

The detailed bathymetric surveys carried out made it possible to assess the extent of the problem linked to the reservoirs silting and to define their useful life under changing climatic and land use conditions.
