The Cellina torrent, with its 445 km² of drainage basin, is the most important water body around the hydrographic system of the Livenza river from the point of view of its security hydraulic implications affecting the province of Pordenone and the Veneto region (North-East of Italy). The flows originated by the Cellina torrent cause frequent floods, often very large and sometimes disastrous proportions in terms of caused damages on the territory.
Along the Cellina torrent, it was recently built the dam of Ravedis: it represents an important artificial gravity barrier of considerable height and maximum storage capacity of 26 Mm³.
The project aims to the optimization of the multiple uses of the water (water supply, energy production, irrigation, flood management) of the reservoir upstream the dam.
BETA Studio was appointed to implement a system for real-time forecasting of the water uses in order to obtain benefits in both water management and energy fields and in order to create an instrument for the decision makers within the water utilities.
The principle used by BETA Studio in the project is to promote the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, between the water utilities companies involved, in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems. Points of strength:

  • the forecast system has found considerable interest by water utilities “Cellina-Meduna” and by others agencies responsible for monitoring dams. (In Italy, this is the first forecast system in real time used to the dynamic manage of reservoir aimed to reduce flood risk and using weather Forecast information);
  • it is expected that in the future other water utilities/dam operators will be interested in using this System.
