Multipurpose Water Harvesting Structures (MW)

BETA Studio, in JV with Z&A Consulting Engineers (Cyprus) and Design Management Consultants (Malawi), has won the tender for the services concerning the preparation of Feasibility Study, Detailed Design, and Construction Supervision of Multipurpose Water Harvesting Structures in Malawi, Client Ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources, World Bank funds.

The project will focus on reconstruction and recovery efforts within the districts affected by both the recent 2019 Cyclone Idai and 2016 drought events. The assignment is structured around four main components namely: Improving Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods, Enhancing Drought and Flood Risk Management, Contingent Emergency Response Component, and Project Management.

The objective of this project is to reduce the risk of communities being exposed to flooding and enhance the resilience of communities to drought through strategic infrastructure investments. The project will support both the rehabilitation and construction of water harvesting structures, in 17 different target locations of the country, constructed for multipurpose use, including irrigation and/or water supply, flood defense, and control structures such as dykes, check dams, and drainage structures. The project will provide the implementation of nature-based solutions that will enhance natural habitat and increase biodiversity by controlling siltation, run-off, and improving the restoration and conservation plans in micro-catchments, including strengthening community management, located in hotspots upstream of critical infrastructure.

All the 17 infrastructures will be planned and designed in a climate-resilient manner, as they will be operated in a way that anticipates, prepares for, and adapts to changing climate conditions. Improved flood management infrastructure will support climate adaptation to excess rainfall conditions and flood impacts.
